One of my greatest desires as a coach is for my players to make their teammates better on and off the court. I also want to see them rise to the occasion when it means the most—game day. David has given us a road map for both in his new book greatness.
— Scott Drew, Baylor Men’s Basketball Coach, greatness, p. ix

Commentary:

In today’s message, I want to speak about Scott Drew. I was fortunate to serve as sport psychologist for his staff and team several years ago for several seasons. He is the real deal. What I mean by that is that he is the greatest coach I have worked within my forty-year career. I use that word in the context of my book, greatness. He coaches with the concept of “infectious joy.” I observed him truly love his players, never curse or demean, develop good athletes into becoming the best of the best, treat his staff with great respect and honor, share his faith consistently and in a winsome manner, and exude joy every day in practice no matter what the situation. It was actually amazing to hear his players on national television during their championship run speak of joy when interviewed. I have never heard an athlete ever use that word. It was evident that infectious joy was the key to them exploding on the scene and winning the National Championship in a most decisive manner. It can easily be argued they were the best college basketball team of all time. The power of love and joy was proven to be greater than the fear of failure that haunts most teams. I love Scott Drew for showing us all what true greatness looks like. He is the real deal and that is so refreshing.
