Breadcrumbs to Your Calling
Have you found your calling? I have been reflecting on how I got here—how a C student in English from a family that didn’t put an emphasis on reading books or appreciating good literature emerged with a calling to write.
Words have been the breadcrumbs on my journey. Words captivated me, inspired me, and led me. God continued to introduce wordsmith mentors throughout my journey to periodically awaken the dream seed of writing. I was often engrossed in the lyrics of Dan Fogelburg like “To the Morning” and captivated by the poet trio of Shelly, Keats, and Wordsworth. I remember standing as a young man in the Lincoln Memorial, reading the second inaugural address engraved in the marble wall. This gifted wordsmith and hero emboldened me. Robert Frost compelled me to take roads less traveled. Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If” cemented my feet into the foundation of character. Norman Maclean’s enchanting final paragraph in “A River Runs Through It”, while mysterious and elusive, gave clarity to my calling and has become the standard to which I aspire as a writer.
I am amazed at how God refuses to let our callings die. He was so creative in His ways with me. I finally saw… I eventually took that first step. Take some time to discover the breadcrumbs to your calling. The world needs you right now. The world needs you to be walking in your calling.
