Turn to the Right or Left

“Whether you turn to the right or left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, this is the way, walk in it.” Isaiah 30:21

Have you ever taken a journey using this verse… literally? My wife and I did several years ago. I had just completed eight years with the Spurs and that relationship had come to a close. Two of my business partners had decided to launch out on their own. We were at a critical juncture in our lives. What was next?

We prayed and headed out on a “turn to the right or left” adventure with God. We flew into Albuquerque, rented a car and headed north with no plan, just the voice of God. At each major highway intersection we prayed and asked God for direction.

Our first treasure happened as we were driving over the pass from Chama to Antonito. It is an amazing high pass through a mountain valley at about 10,000 feet. We noticed a few homes being built near the mountain stream. We turned in at the prompting of the Lord. In the next few hours we met a contractor. He was a believer and asked us to pray with him about some major issues in his life. He then insisted that we drive down the road and meet his family. It was a very special time.

As we left this experience and headed down the mountain road we knew that we had just encountered God. The most amazing rainbow appeared over a golden wheat field as we entered Antonito. The moment was priceless.

“This rainbow is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.” Genesis 9:17

We attempted to stay in Alamosa that evening but there were no rooms so we headed for the next town. The following morning we were leaving the parking lot and prayed about where to eat breakfast: fast food to get on the way, or a sit down breakfast at a diner. God led us to the diner.

There were two couples sitting near our table discussing the Purpose Driven Life book. While waiting to pay I struck up a conversation with one of the men. He asked me what we were doing. Not knowing exactly how to answer the question, I told him I was an author and we were on a “right or left journey” seeking direction for the next season of life. He said that he owned a cabin a few miles down the road and that they were from Louisiana, a few miles from where I was born. He said that the other couple was heading back to Louisiana that morning and that he and his wife were heading back to the cabin.

We shook hands and I went and got in the car. Next thing I knew there was a lady knocking on my window. It was the wife of this gentleman. I hadn’t met her inside. I rolled down the window and she spoke these words. “You and your wife are supposed to stay with us in the cabin tonight. God told us to build our cabin and that it would be used to encourage Christian authors and others in ministry that needed a place to go and pray and seek God.”

In the next twenty-four hours we spent time at this glorious cabin in the Rockies, cooking an Italian dinner and breaking bread, sharing a glass or two of wine, telling God stories, praying fervently, and being prophesied over by this amazing couple.

The next day we drove off in awe, our cups full, with resolve in our step for the next season of our lives. That season included the writing of my book and the making of the movie. God launched our new season as we took a journey of faith…“turn to the right or the left.”

Oh, and by the way, the first thing the audience sees on the movie screen… “Whether you turn to the right or left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, this is the way, walk in it.” Isaiah 30:21
