I repeated the fly-casting once again. My focus was on rhythm, balance, and patience. It was as though I was in a trance. For a few moments I forgot where I was, who was watching, and how I had gotten there. It was just a rod, a fish, and me. The experience was mesmerizing. The water was like glass as the stillness of the Texas Hill Country settled around me and within me. The only sound was the whispering of the line as it danced back and forth like a hummingbird between flowers. A slight smile came across my face as I experienced the emersion beyond performing, an emersion into art.

Commentary:

We just arrived to our new home in the Vail Valley of Colorado. One of the activities that I will cherish the most up here is fly-fishing. I love most of all what it teaches me. The illusive zone experiences in life can only happen when we quiet the noise of expectation, fear, overthinking, and the opinions of others. Performance has to become art, and letting has to overwhelm trying, striving, and an outcome focus. The zone is set in motion through three simple words: rhythm, balance, and patience. And to stay there we have to move beyond the mind… our heart must be at peace.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

- John 14:27  NIV

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

- Philippians 4:7  NIV
