The Broken Shaft Society
“ The Buried Lies Cemetery has become the home of the 'Broken Shaft Society'.”
- David Cook, site visit 3/22
This week I drove 17 hours from Vail to Utopia, Texas for my yearly pilgrimage to the Links of Utopia Golf Course and the Buried Lies Cemetery. I was moved deeply by what I saw. The picture above says it all. Not only have people by the thousands been burying their lies there for 15 years, but many have taken a club, broken it, and stuck it there as a symbol. It is a symbol of a passage. Moving from the pain of the lies, to freedom with the Almighty. This unsolicited movement began over 10 years ago by 1996 Texas Open Champion, David Ogrin. He brought a group of men from his church for a retreat in Utopia. They left a broken club that had a special engraving on the sole plate of the wood commemorating the moment. Since that time more broken clubs have populated this sacred spot. As I was standing there alone this week, the spring breeze seemed to usher in this verse out of the Psalms.
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” - Psalm 51:17
As spring begins to break off the grey chill of winter, you may need to break off some lies that have hitched a ride for way too long. If so, go to didhemaketheputt.com, listen to the message then bury your lies online. We will copy them off with thousands of others and bury them at the Buried Lies Cemetery. To commemorate the moment, you may want to break a club and stick it in your backyard as a symbol of freedom. You then will be an official member of the “Broken Shaft Society.” Thank you David Ogrin for heeding the voice of the Holy Spirit on that day many years ago.
