SFT

In a recent season, while working with an NBA team, I was coaching a player who had just signed a major deal with the team. It was a dream contract. The problem for him and many of us is that this kind of deal can become a distraction. Success can breed fear. Success will always come with new interference points. Thoughts come that can take you out of your game—thoughts like, “now I have to live up to this new expectation,” or “now I have to be perfect all the time to be deserving of this,” or “what if I fail in front of all these people who know about my new contract,” or “I have to be superman now.” The key to winning the inner game when the thought storms rage is to be able to fight off the onslaught with your tangible goal close to mind. We win when our focus is riveted on our specific goal. It is our foundation.

This NBA player found his true north by writing SFT on the toes of each of his game-day shoes. Whenever the battle in his mind would flare up he simply looked down and locked into his goal. His goal was to stay in his process—SEE, FEEL, TRUST. He was able to stay focused and steadfast during the intense 82-game season and help his team receive a playoff berth. His attitude turned from fear to passion. He loved playing again, and his joy for the game returned. It affected everyone around him but most of all it affected his play. He found his rhythm once again.

In my experience, I have found that success can be just as distracting as a failure. Mental chaos can rule if we don’t have a tangible bulletproof go to focus. Keep your goal or focus points in strategic and creative places that you can easily see as you go through life. They will become signposts to success in the end. They will help hold mental chaos at bay, the key to reaching your potential when it means the most. Secure a copy of “greatness” and join me on this journey to selfless exceptionalism.
