Utopia Christmas Tree

Here is a Utopia Christmas tree. It’s my present to you since you can’t be here right now. I thought you would like it. Like me you long to be in such a place… to catch a glimpse of the daily “Obra Maestra” painted upon the backdrop of Utopia. This one left me breathless as I walked the Sabinal River bed. The peculiar silence offered a stage for this demonstration of awe. I watched as God’s brush stroke of colors caused the heart shaped ornaments to applaud in celebration.

The Twelve Foot Putt

I received a call one day from my colleague and dear friend, Dr. Rick McGuire, from the University of Missouri. It was back in the day when he and I were professors of sport psychology at our prospective schools. I was at KU. He was calling about a young mini tour golfer, Stan Utley, who he had been helping

The Circle of Faith

When I was 14 an evangelist showed up at our public high school. At a school wide assembly that morning where he spoke he invited us to come down to his crusade that night. It would be held at the Heart of Texas Coliseum, in Waco, Texas—a rodeo arena.

INFLUENCE

Just the other day I was invited to play golf and speak at our church’s annual golf tournament. The six campuses of this mega church in the DFW area gathered together to compete for the trophy that will be displayed for the next year at the church that wins. The course was packed.

Juxtaposition

I had the privilege of preaching at 2nd Baptist Church of Houston a few years back. It is a mega church in Houston led by my friend Pastor Ed Young. They have several campuses and many thousands of members. After preaching several services at the main campus I was transferred in a van to the Katy, Texas, campus late Sunday morning for my final sermon. I had a wonderful time with the congregation. As I said my good byes, I headed across the highway from this affluent church to fill my truck with gas before driving back to San Antonio. I was dressed in my suit like most of the people there.

Golf's Sacred Journey, The Sequel

A few years back I self-published Johnny’s US Open, the sequel to Golf’s Sacred Journey. Over the past two years we re-worked and overhauled it with the lead editors of Zondervan, the publishing company that published our first book. It has just been published nationally this past Monday and is in much better shape. It is a beautifully designed hardcover book. It has also been re-titled: Golf’s Sacred Journey, the Sequel.

Spring in Utopia

Spring. I love that word especially after a winter like we have had. The cold and grey does that to you. It’s relentless hold on nature presses against hope. But then out of nowhere, a seed that fell to the ground during winter’s first assault sprouts. The miracle of life and creation’s source of anticipation breaks through the frozen lifeless ground. The scrawny looking arms of the leafless tress suddenly become covered with knobby little buds that challenge winter’s last bluffs. And then one day it happens. An explosion of color and growth and with it a dissipation of hopelessness and fear that this would be the year that spring wouldn’t return.

A Christmas Revelation from Utopia

I had a revelation the other day. I’m hoping that it will speak to your heart this Christmas season. Joseph had a dream, his second dream from an angel. In this particular dream the angel told Joseph to take Mary and the baby Jesus and walk across the desert hundreds of miles to Egypt. No convenience stores or hotels along the way; to a country with a different language and they would travel through territory where thieves could appear at any moment.

I wish you could spend a day with me in Utopia...

I am not sure why but it just seems to be a place for personal revelation -- an epicenter of heavenly downloads. Something unexplainable happens as I sit among the majestic Cypress that line the shimmering crystalline Sabinal River. The Cypress needles are dressed in their elegant autumn red. The scent of a chimney’s first fire stirs the soul and awakens some ancient emotion.  The feathery cirrus clouds hang high above the v shaped patterns of the ushers of change. The caress of the long anticipated north breeze breaks the hold of summer causing it to drift ever further south to the lower hemisphere. It’s a new season…
