Plow and Plant

Do you ever ask God for a sign? Do you look for an unfolding parable from Him to provide clues to the answers you are seeking? My life has been full of them; they have fueled my faith and provided depth to my testimony of a never-ending adventure with the Almighty. I have led quite a few projects in my life. On one occasion several people had compromised the purpose of a significant project and I was in agony. It felt like the weight of the world was resting on my shoulders. I took some time and drove to our ranch in Utopia where I hear from the Lord most clearly. I walked deep into our ranch and began to pray for a sign for what I should do. I was standing next to a 25-acre oat field that had been infested by purple thistles in the spring that had now turned into a briar patch of thorns and nutrient-free weeds that the cattle and deer wouldn’t eat. As I was praying the Lord told me to climb the fence and walk to the middle of the thistle field. It was hot and the crispy brown thistles stuck into every part of my sweat-stained clothes and body as I worked my way to the center. The rattling of the thistles sounded like the rattle of creatures indigenous to that place causing my heart to beat wildly. When I reached the middle of the field covered in sweat, dust, and thorns, the Lord asked me to lay face down on the ground. He then asked me to look around and tell him what I saw. I said, “An infestation of thistles.” He then asked me for what was the original purpose of the field. I said, “To plant oats that would provide sustenance for the cattle and deer during the winter months.” He simply said, “Then plow and plant.” He was clearly speaking about the project now. And so I did, and though it was difficult the original mission of the God-led project was rescued, and because of that eternity was changed.
Maybe you are in a similar spot today. Ask for signs, he loves to reveal answers through signs and parables just for you.
