Have you ever been trapped in a lifeless goal set by someone else? It crushes the spirit, saps energy, and undermines internal motivation. Great leaders inspire passion by tying it into individual ownership. And when we own it, inspired performances happen and leaders become encouragers rather than dictators, they give life rather than take it, and they walk into greatness: selfless exceptionalism.
I started out my college career in engineering. It was my dad’s dream for each of his sons because it had been a great life for him. I struggled my first two years trying to love something that wasn’t my goal. Finally, I heard of this new field called “sport psychology.” It piqued my interest and desire in every way. I changed my major to exercise science so that I could pursue a graduate degree in this field that had captured my imagination. My dad could see the passion in my life change and came on board with me even though he didn’t have a clue how this was going to work out. I earned a Ph.D. in Applied Sport and Performance Psychology from the Univ. of Virginia becoming one of the forerunners of an entire discipline. My life became an amazing adventure of coaching elite performers and teams to take hold of their destiny. The moment I found and owned my goal, life changed on a dime and I never looked back.
Maybe you are stuck in someone else’s dream for your life. It is never too late to change. Find your dream, own it, then go on a grand adventure as you seek your true destiny.
