People of Greatness

Two major traits radiate from people of greatness: the need to achieve and the need to give.

Greatness people combine these creatively to do things very few have ever achieved, while at the same time using the journey and the achievements to change the world around them. Their legacy is powerful yet other-focused. Those of true greatness lift others, encourage others, and inspire others with their words and exceptional actions. They call out and guard the dreams of others. They are dream guardians. They live above the negative stereotypes associated with limelight-seeking champions: greed, anger, selfishness, intimidation, and rule-bending. Their character is to give, not take.

Greatness people don’t bask in the limelight. They redirect attention to others. Greatness isn’t about being larger than life or the center of the universe. It’s about being a servant, a giver. It isn’t about me. It’s about others. Greatness goes through success and then keeps going. Greatness is the place beyond success. Not all champions reach this mark: only those with a noble heart; only those with a selfless ego.

My picture this week is of Jack Nicklaus carrying one of his sons many years ago. It is the week of the PGA Championship, one of the four majors. Jack won this tournament 5 times. Behind the scenes, Jack had 5 children. He often would fly home on Friday evenings in the middle of a tournament to see his kids play sport then fly back to the tournament site the following day to finish the tournament. He was devoted to his wife and the charities that they so graciously started or supported together. And this week, in his own words, he turned down $100 million dollars to be the face of the new Saudi Tour that will compete against the PGA Tour. He did this because of his loyalty to the PGA Tour which provided the backdrop for his greatness to emerge. While no man is perfect, I would have to say that Jack is a person of greatness.

“Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
- Matthew 18:4 (AMP)
